Telehealth Counseling

I recently made the decision to switch to telehealth-only appointments, as I find that it allows greater reach and more flexibility for my private practice. You may have strong opinions about telehealth counseling.  If you’re on the fence about telehealth, or wondering if video appointments can work for you, I hope that the following will help you decide to give it a try!

1. Increased Accessibility

One of the most significant benefits of telehealth counseling is its ability to reach people in remote or underserved areas. In many rural or isolated communities across Oregon and Washington State, access to in-person mental health services can be limited due to the scarcity of therapists or long travel distances. Telehealth removes geographical barriers, allowing you to connect with a licensed counselors from the comfort of your home or from locations that are convenient for you. This accessibility is especially important for people with mobility issues, those living in areas with few mental health professionals, parents of young children, people working from home, or people with demanding schedules.

2. Convenience and Flexibility

Telehealth counseling offers unparalleled flexibility. You can schedule appointments during non-traditional hours, such as evenings or Saturday, making it easier to fit therapy into your busy life. The ability to attend therapy from home also eliminates the need for travel time, saving both time and money. Additionally, if you have difficulty attending in-person sessions due to childcare needs, work obligations, or other responsibilities, you may find telehealth to be an especially practical solution.

3. Comfort and Privacy

For many people, discussing sensitive issues with a therapist in a face-to-face setting can feel intimidating or uncomfortable. Telehealth counseling allows you to engage in therapy from the comfort of your own home, where you may feel more relaxed and open. The private setting can encourage greater honesty, making it easier for you to discuss personal or difficult topics. You may also find that accessing therapy from your own home gives you a feeling of more privacy.

4. Better for Some Mental Health Conditions

Certain mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or agoraphobia, can make it difficult for some people to leave their homes. Telehealth counseling can provide an essential lifeline for these folks by allowing them to receive treatment without the added stress or discomfort of traveling to an in-person session. If this is true for you, telehealth can help you engage more easily in therapy, and improve your ability to manage severe anxiety or depression.

6. Expanded Therapeutic Options

Telehealth counseling often provides clients with a broader selection of therapists to choose from. People can find professionals who specialize in their specific needs, whether that’s cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed therapy, or family counseling, without being limited by geographic location. This wider selection may increase the likelihood of a good therapeutic match, which is essential for effective treatment.

I hope that you will feel free to reach out to me to discuss what your needs are for a counselor, and that you find telehealth counseling to be a good fit for you! I have seen many of my clients exclusively via secure, HIPPA-compliant video, and have been able to establish excellent relationships, and excellent outcomes with my telehealth clients. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, trying to heal from a traumatic past, depression, or relationship troubles, telehealth is a great way to start making the good changes you deserve and desire!
