Active Counseling for Couples

Empowering, Supportive, Experiential, and Engaged

online and in-person

Welcome!

I'm Sarah Oaks, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, focusing on Couples Therapy in Greensboro, NC. My therapeutic approach is trauma-aware, compassion-rooted, gentle, and respectful, and anchored by a recovery and healing mindset.

Couples Counseling in Greensboro

I am informed by extensive training in Emotion-Focused Couples therapy; Inner Family Systems awareness; and my own experiences with trauma and healing. I welcome, honor, and affirm LGBTQIA + individuals and couples. Whatever you've been through as a couple, I strive to help you gently face your challenges and secret fears so that you can come through life's transitions as a team, invigorated in a new direction.

What is Active Counseling?

Active counseling is experiential and engaged. It means that you, your partner, and I are working hard in each session to help you both create the loving, connected, low-intensity relationship you desire. Starting with our first appointment, even as I'm gathering information and learning more about your relationship, I will work to help you both begin to understand and shift emotional patterns, so you can start experiencing relief and hope within our first sessions. We will work together to accomplish your couple goals, however you envision them.

Trauma Awareness.

I have special interest in working with couples or individuals where one or both partners have experienced trauma, whether childhood neglect or abuse, assault, or harm in a previous relationship; or, the trauma of an affair or other type of betrayal. Feeling emotionally activated, having difficulty resolving conflicts, blaming our partner or ourselves for our difficulties, fluctuating between hurt, withdrawal, and desperation to feel our partner's love-these all can reflect the aftermath of trauma. As you begin to feel safe in your relationship, your partner can become a source of the deep nurturing that allows individual healing from traumatic events, as well as profound connection and a new type of relationship in the present.

I offer a no-charge, 20-minute phone consultation so you can ask any questions and get a sense of how we might work together and what to expect from me and from a couples therapy session.
